Chapter XXI
제21장 ― 사자는 짐승들의 왕이 되다


도자기 벽에서 내려온 뒤, 여행자들은 진창과 늪투성이에 키 크고 무성한 풀이 뒤덮인, 걷기 몹시 불쾌한 나라에 들어서게 되었다. 풀은 너무 빽빽해서 진흙 구덩이를 눈으로도 알아볼 수 없었으므로, 한 걸음 잘못 디디면 질퍽한 구멍에 빠지기 쉬웠다. 그러나 조심조심 길을 골라가며, 그들은 마침내 무사히 단단한 땅에 닿았다. 하지만 그곳은 전보다도 더 거칠고 황량해 보였고, 덤불 사이를 오래도록 지치게 걸어간 끝에, 그들은 전에 본 적 없는 만큼 크고 늙은 나무들이 서 있는 또 다른 숲으로 들어섰다.

“이 숲은 정말 더할 나위 없이 멋지군요.” 사자가 기쁨에 찬 얼굴로 주위를 둘러보며 말했다. “이보다 아름다운 곳은 이제껏 본 적이 없어요.”

“음산해 보이는데.” 허수아비가 말했다.

“전혀 그렇지 않아요.” 사자가 대답했다. “평생 여기서 살고 싶을 정도예요. 발밑의 마른 낙엽이 얼마나 부드러운지 보세요. 저 오래된 나무들에 달라붙은 이끼도 얼마나 짙고 푸른지요. 분명 어떤 야수라도 이보다 더 즐거운 보금자리를 바라지 못할 거예요.”

“지금도 이 숲에 야수들이 살고 있을지 몰라.” 도로시가 말했다.

“그럴 거라고 생각해요.” 사자가 대꾸했다. “하지만 여기엔 아무도 보이지 않는군요.”

그들은 숲을 걷다가, 더는 앞으로 갈 수 없을 만큼 어두워지자 멈추었다. 도로시와 토토와 사자는 누워 잠을 잤고, 양철나무꾼과 허수아비는 늘 하던 대로 그들을 지키며 밤을 새웠다.

아침이 되자, 그들은 다시 길을 나섰다. 얼마 가지 않아, 수많은 야수들이 으르렁거리는 소리 같은 낮고 둔탁한 울림이 들려왔다. 토토는 조금 낑낑거렸지만, 다른 이들은 겁내지 않았고, 닳고 닳은 오솔길을 따라 계속 걸었다. 그러다 숲 속이 트인 빈터에 이르렀는데, 그곳에는 온갖 종류의 짐승들이 수백 마리나 모여 있었다. 호랑이와 코끼리와 곰과 늑대와 여우, 그리고 자연사 책에 나오는 온갖 짐승들이 다 있었고, 도로시는 잠시 두려움을 느꼈다. 그러나 사자가 설명하기를, 짐승들이 회의를 열고 있는 것이며, 그들이 이를 드러내고 으르렁거리는 모습을 보아 큰 곤경에 처한 것이 분명하다고 했다.

사자가 말하는 동안, 몇몇 짐승이 그를 알아보았고, 그러자 거대한 무리는 마치 마법에 걸린 듯 즉시 조용해졌다. 그중 가장 큰 호랑이가 사자 앞으로 나와 고개를 숙이며 말했다.

“어서 오십시오, 오 짐승들의 왕이시여! 마침 좋은 때에 오셨습니다. 우리의 적과 싸워 주시고, 숲의 모든 짐승에게 다시 평화를 가져다주실 때에 오셨습니다.”

“무슨 문제인가?” 사자가 조용히 물었다.

“우리 모두가 위협받고 있습니다.” 호랑이가 대답했다. “최근 이 숲에 들어온 흉포한 적 때문입니다. 그것은 코끼리만 한 몸통을 가진 거대한 거미 같은 엄청난 괴물인데, 다리는 나무 기둥만큼 길지요. 그 긴 다리가 여덟 개나 있습니다. 그 괴물이 숲을 기어다니며 다리로 짐승을 낚아채 끌어당기면, 거미가 파리를 먹듯이 입으로 끌어가 먹어 치웁니다. 그 사나운 생물이 살아 있는 한 우리 중 누구도 안전하지 못합니다. 그래서 당신께서 우리 가운데 오시기 전, 우리는 스스로를 어떻게 지킬지 의논하려고 회의를 열고 있었습니다.”

사자는 잠시 생각에 잠겼다.

“이 숲에 다른 사자들이 있나?” 그가 물었다.

“아니요. 예전에 몇 마리 있었지만, 그 괴물이 모두 잡아먹었습니다. 게다가 그들 중 누구도 당신만큼 크고 용감하지 못했습니다.”

“내가 그 적을 끝장내면, 나에게 머리를 숙이고 숲의 왕으로서 내 말을 따르겠나?” 사자가 물었다.

“기꺼이 그렇게 하겠습니다.” 호랑이가 대답하자, 다른 짐승들 모두가 우렁찬 함성으로 외쳤다. “그러겠습니다!”

“그 거대한 거미는 지금 어디에 있나?” 사자가 물었다.

“저기 참나무들 사이에 있습니다.” 호랑이가 앞발로 가리키며 말했다.

“내 친구들을 잘 돌봐 주게.” 사자가 말했다. “나는 곧장 그 괴물과 싸우러 가겠다.”

그는 동료들에게 작별을 고하고, 적과 전투를 벌이기 위해 늠름하게 걸어갔다.

사자가 그 거대한 거미를 찾아냈을 때, 거미는 잠들어 있었고, 그 모습이 너무 흉측해서 사자는 역겨운 듯 코를 찡그렸다. 다리는 호랑이가 말한 대로 정말 길었고, 몸통은 거칠고 검은 털로 뒤덮여 있었다. 입은 크고, 길이가 한 자나 되는 날카로운 이빨이 줄지어 있었지만, 머리는 말벌 허리처럼 가느다란 목으로 통통한 몸통과 이어져 있었다. 그 점이 사자에게 이 괴물을 공격할 가장 좋은 방법을 암시해 주었다. 깨어 있을 때보다 잠들어 있을 때 상대하는 편이 더 쉽다는 것도 알고 있었으므로, 사자는 크게 뛰어올라 곧장 괴물의 등 위에 내려앉았다. 그리고 날카로운 발톱으로 무장한 무거운 앞발을 한 번 내리치자, 거미의 머리가 몸통에서 떨어져 나갔다. 사자는 뛰어내려, 긴 다리들이 꿈틀거리다 멈출 때까지 지켜보았고, 그제야 완전히 죽었음을 알았다.

사자는 숲의 짐승들이 기다리던 빈터로 돌아와 자랑스럽게 말했다.

“이제 그대들은 더 이상 그 적을 두려워하지 않아도 된다.”

그러자 짐승들은 사자에게 머리를 숙이며 그를 왕으로 받들었고, 사자는 도로시가 무사히 캔자스로 향하는 길에 오르면, 가능한 한 빨리 돌아와 그들을 다스리겠다고 약속했다.

Chapter XXI
The Lion Becomes the King of Beasts


After climbing down from the china wall the travelers found themselves
in a disagreeable country, full of bogs and marshes and covered with
tall, rank grass. It was difficult to walk without falling into muddy
holes, for the grass was so thick that it hid them from sight. However,
by carefully picking their way, they got safely along until they
reached solid ground. But here the country seemed wilder than ever, and
after a long and tiresome walk through the underbrush they entered
another forest, where the trees were bigger and older than any they had
ever seen.

“This forest is perfectly delightful,” declared the Lion, looking
around him with joy. “Never have I seen a more beautiful place.”

“It seems gloomy,” said the Scarecrow.

“Not a bit of it,” answered the Lion. “I should like to live here all
my life. See how soft the dried leaves are under your feet and how rich
and green the moss is that clings to these old trees. Surely no wild
beast could wish a pleasanter home.”

“Perhaps there are wild beasts in the forest now,” said Dorothy.

“I suppose there are,” returned the Lion, “but I do not see any of them
about.”

They walked through the forest until it became too dark to go any
farther. Dorothy and Toto and the Lion lay down to sleep, while the
Woodman and the Scarecrow kept watch over them as usual.

When morning came, they started again. Before they had gone far they
heard a low rumble, as of the growling of many wild animals. Toto
whimpered a little, but none of the others was frightened, and they
kept along the well-trodden path until they came to an opening in the
wood, in which were gathered hundreds of beasts of every variety. There
were tigers and elephants and bears and wolves and foxes and all the
others in the natural history, and for a moment Dorothy was afraid. But
the Lion explained that the animals were holding a meeting, and he
judged by their snarling and growling that they were in great trouble.

As he spoke several of the beasts caught sight of him, and at once the
great assemblage hushed as if by magic. The biggest of the tigers came
up to the Lion and bowed, saying:

“Welcome, O King of Beasts! You have come in good time to fight our
enemy and bring peace to all the animals of the forest once more.”

“What is your trouble?” asked the Lion quietly.

“We are all threatened,” answered the tiger, “by a fierce enemy which
has lately come into this forest. It is a most tremendous monster, like
a great spider, with a body as big as an elephant and legs as long as a
tree trunk. It has eight of these long legs, and as the monster crawls
through the forest he seizes an animal with a leg and drags it to his
mouth, where he eats it as a spider does a fly. Not one of us is safe
while this fierce creature is alive, and we had called a meeting to
decide how to take care of ourselves when you came among us.”

The Lion thought for a moment.

“Are there any other lions in this forest?” he asked.

“No; there were some, but the monster has eaten them all. And, besides,
they were none of them nearly so large and brave as you.”

“If I put an end to your enemy, will you bow down to me and obey me as
King of the Forest?” inquired the Lion.

“We will do that gladly,” returned the tiger; and all the other beasts
roared with a mighty roar: “We will!”

“Where is this great spider of yours now?” asked the Lion.

“Yonder, among the oak trees,” said the tiger, pointing with his
forefoot.

“Take good care of these friends of mine,” said the Lion, “and I will
go at once to fight the monster.”

He bade his comrades good-bye and marched proudly away to do battle
with the enemy.

The great spider was lying asleep when the Lion found him, and it
looked so ugly that its foe turned up his nose in disgust. Its legs
were quite as long as the tiger had said, and its body covered with
coarse black hair. It had a great mouth, with a row of sharp teeth a
foot long; but its head was joined to the pudgy body by a neck as
slender as a wasp’s waist. This gave the Lion a hint of the best way to
attack the creature, and as he knew it was easier to fight it asleep
than awake, he gave a great spring and landed directly upon the
monster’s back. Then, with one blow of his heavy paw, all armed with
sharp claws, he knocked the spider’s head from its body. Jumping down,
he watched it until the long legs stopped wiggling, when he knew it was
quite dead.

The Lion went back to the opening where the beasts of the forest were
waiting for him and said proudly:

“You need fear your enemy no longer.”

Then the beasts bowed down to the Lion as their King, and he promised
to come back and rule over them as soon as Dorothy was safely on her
way to Kansas.

Chapter XXI
第21章 ― ライオン、百獣の王となる


陶器の壁を降りたあと、旅人たちは、ぬかるみや沼が多く、背の高い粗い草に覆われた、歩くのが不快な国に出た。草があまりに密生していて泥の穴が見えず、足を取られずに歩くのは難しかった。それでも注意深く道を選び、彼らは無事に固い地面へたどり着いた。だがそこは以前にも増して荒れ、藪の中を長く疲れるほど歩いたのち、彼らは、これまで見たどの森よりも大きく古い木々が立つ、別の森へ入った。

「この森はまったく素晴らしい。」ライオンは喜びに満ちて辺りを見回しながら言った。「こんなに美しい場所は見たことがない。」

「薄気味悪いよ。」かかしが言った。

「そんなことはない。」ライオンは答えた。「一生ここに住みたいくらいだ。足の下の乾いた落ち葉がどれほど柔らかいか見てごらん。それに、古い木にまとわりつく苔の、なんと濃く緑豊かなことか。どんな野獣でも、これ以上心地よい住みかを望みはしないさ。」

「今もこの森に野獣がいるかもしれないわ。」ドロシーが言った。

「いるだろうね。」ライオンは返した。「でも、周りには見当たらない。」

森を進むうち、先へ行けないほど暗くなったので、彼らは止まった。ドロシーとトトとライオンは横になって眠り、ブリキの木こりとかかしはいつものように見張りをした。

朝になると、彼らはまた出発した。あまり遠くへ行かないうちに、多くの野獣が唸っているような低い轟きが聞こえた。トトは少しクンクン鳴いたが、ほかの者は怖がらず、踏み固められた小道を進み続けた。やがて森の中の開けた場所に出ると、そこにはあらゆる種類の獣が何百も集まっていた。虎や象や熊や狼や狐、博物の本に載るような獣がみな揃っていて、ドロシーは一瞬恐ろしくなった。だがライオンは、獣たちが会議を開いているのだと説明し、歯をむき唸る様子から、彼らが大きな困難に陥っているのだろうと見当をつけた。

そう言ううち、何匹かの獣が彼に気づき、すると大集団は魔法でもかかったようにたちまち静まり返った。最大の虎がライオンのところへ来ておじぎをし、こう言った。

「ようこそ、百獣の王よ！　敵と戦い、森の獣たちに再び平和をもたらしてくださるのに、まさに良い時においでくださいました。」

「何が問題だ？」ライオンは静かに尋ねた。

「私たちは皆、脅かされています。」虎は答えた。「最近この森に入り込んだ凶暴な敵によってです。それは巨大な蜘蛛のような恐ろしい怪物で、体は象ほどもあり、脚は木の幹ほどの長さです。その長い脚が八本あり、森を這い回りながら脚で獣をつかまえて口へ引きずり込み、蜘蛛が蠅を食べるように食い尽くしてしまうのです。この凶暴な生き物が生きている限り、私たちの誰一匹として安全ではありません。あなたが来られる前、私たちは自分たちをどう守るか決めるために会議を開いていたのです。」

ライオンはしばらく考えた。

「この森にほかのライオンはいるか？」と彼は尋ねた。

「いいえ。以前はいましたが、怪物が皆食べてしまいました。それに、彼らは誰もあなたほど大きく勇敢ではありませんでした。」

「私がその敵を倒したら、私にひれ伏し、森の王として私に従うか？」ライオンは尋ねた。

「喜んで従います。」虎が答えると、ほかの獣たちも大合唱のように吠えた。「従う！」

「その大蜘蛛はいまどこにいる？」ライオンが尋ねた。

「あちら、樫の木々の間です。」虎は前足で指し示した。

「この友だちをよく守ってくれ。」ライオンは言った。「私はすぐ怪物と戦いに行く。」

彼は仲間に別れを告げ、誇らしく進み出て敵と戦うことにした。

巨大な蜘蛛は、ライオンが見つけたとき眠っていた。あまりに醜いので、ライオンは嫌悪して鼻をしかめた。脚は虎が言ったとおりの長さで、体は粗い黒い毛に覆われていた。大きな口には一フィートほどもある鋭い歯が並んでいたが、頭は蜂の腰のように細い首で、ぶよぶよした体に繋がっていた。これが、どう攻めるのが最善かをライオンに教えた。目覚めているときより眠っているときのほうが戦いやすいと知っていたので、ライオンは大きく跳び、まっすぐ怪物の背に着地した。そして鋭い爪を備えた重い前足を一撃振り下ろすと、蜘蛛の頭は体から叩き落とされた。飛び降りたライオンは、長い脚がぴくぴく動くのが止まるまで見届け、完全に死んだのを確かめた。

ライオンは、森の獣たちが待つ開けた場所へ戻り、誇らしげに言った。

「もう敵を恐れる必要はない。」

すると獣たちはライオンにひれ伏して王として迎え、ドロシーが無事にカンザスへ向かう道についたら、できるだけ早く戻って彼らを治めるとライオンは約束した。
