[이솝우화] 원숭이와 돌고래 🐒 THE MONKEY AND THE DOLPHIN 🐒 猿とイルカ

사람들이 배를 타고 항해할 때, 종종 시간을 보내기 위해 작은 개나 원숭이를 데리고 간다.
어느 날, 동쪽에서 아테네로 돌아오던 한 남자가 애완 원숭이를 배에 태우고 있었다.
그런데 아티카 해안 근처에서 큰 폭풍이 몰아쳐 배가 뒤집혀 버렸다.
모두 바다에 던져졌고, 원숭이도 헤엄쳐 살아보려 했다.

그때 한 돌고래가 원숭이를 사람으로 착각하고 등에 태워 해안 쪽으로 헤엄쳤다.
피레우스 항구 근처에 도착하자 돌고래가 물었다.
“너는 아테네 사람이니?”
원숭이는 허풍을 치며 “그래, 아주 명문가 출신이지.” 하고 대답했다.

돌고래가 다시 물었다.
“그럼 피레우스를 잘 알겠군?”
원숭이는 ‘피레우스’가 어떤 고관대작 이름인 줄 알고 “물론, 내 오랜 친구야.”라고 했다.
이 말에 돌고래는 거짓말을 눈치채고 크게 실망하여 바닷속으로 잠수해 버렸다.
결국 불쌍한 원숭이는 익사하고 말았다.

거짓말과 허세는 결국 자신을 파멸시킨다.
진실하지 못한 자는 위기의 순간에 신뢰를 잃는다.

THE MONKEY AND THE DOLPHIN

When people go on a voyage they often take with them lap-dogs or monkeys as pets to wile away the time. 

Thus it fell out that a man returning to Athens from the East had a pet Monkey on board with him.
As they neared the coast of Attica a great storm burst upon them, and the ship capsized. 

All on board were thrown into the water, and tried to save themselves by swimming, the Monkey among the rest. 

A Dolphin saw him, and, supposing him to be a man, took him on his back and began swimming towards the shore. 

When they got near the Piræus, which is the port of Athens, the Dolphin asked the Monkey if he was an Athenian. 

The Monkey replied that he was, and added that he came of a very distinguished family. 

"Then, of course, you know the Piræus,"
continued the Dolphin. 

The Monkey thought he was referring to some high official or other, and replied, 

"Oh, yes, he's a very old friend of mine." 

At that, detecting his hypocrisy, the Dolphin was so disgusted that he dived below the surface, and the unfortunate Monkey was quickly drowned.

🐒 猿とイルカ

人々が航海に出るとき、退屈しのぎに小さな犬や猿を連れて行くことがよくあります。
ある日、東の国からアテネへ帰る男が、船にペットの猿を乗せていました。
しかしアッティカの海岸近くで大嵐が起こり、船は転覆してしまいました。
皆が海へ投げ出され、猿も必死に泳ぎました。

すると一頭のイルカが猿を人間だと思い込み、背中に乗せて岸へ向かいました。
ピレウス港の近くに来たとき、イルカが尋ねました。
「君はアテネの人かい？」
猿は得意げに「そうさ、由緒ある名家の出身だ」と答えました。

イルカはさらに聞きました。
「じゃあピレウスを知っているだろう？」
猿は「ピレウス」を人の名前だと勘違いして「もちろん、古くからの友人だ」と言いました。
その瞬間、イルカは猿の嘘に気づき、怒って海の中に潜ってしまいました。
かわいそうに、猿はそのまま溺れてしまいました。

🪞教訓:
嘘と見栄は自分を滅ぼす。
誠実でない者は、いざという時に信頼を失う。
