[이솝우화] 허영심 많은 까치 🐦 THE VAIN JACKDAW 🐦 うぬぼれたカササギ

 

주피터가 새들의 왕을 뽑겠다고 선언하며, 정해진 날에 가장 아름다운 새를 골라 왕으로 삼겠다고 말했다.
새들은 모두 그 날을 위해 강가로 가서 깃털을 씻고 다듬으며 자신의 모습을 가꾸었다.

까치도 그들과 함께 있었지만, 자신의 칙칙한 깃털로는 도무지 뽑힐 수 없다는 걸 알았다.
그래서 다른 새들이 자리를 떠난 후, 그들이 떨어뜨린 화려한 깃털들을 주워 자신의 몸에 붙였다.
그 결과 그는 누구보다 화려해 보였다.

심사가 열리는 날, 모든 새들이 주피터 앞에 모였다.
주피터는 까치를 보고 그를 왕으로 임명하려 했지만, 다른 새들이 달려들어 까치의 꾸민 깃털을 다 뽑아냈고, 결국 그는 본래의 초라한 까치임이 드러나고 말았다.

📚 교훈:

겉모습을 속여도, 진실은 결국 드러난다.

THE VAIN JACKDAW

 

Jupiter announced that he intended to appoint a king over the birds, and named a day on which they were to appear before his throne, when he would select the most beautiful of them all to be their ruler.

 

Wishing to look their best on the occasion they repaired to the banks of a stream,

where they busied themselves in washing and preening their feathers.

 

The Jackdaw was there along with the rest, and realised that, with his ugly plumage,

he would have no chance of being chosen as he was:

so he waited till they were all gone, and then picked up the most gaudy of the feathers they had dropped,

and fastened them about his own body, with the result that he looked gayer than any of them.

 

When the appointed day came, the birds assembled before Jupiter's throne;

and, after passing them in review, he was about to make the Jackdaw king, when all the rest set upon the king-elect, stripped him of his borrowed plumes, and exposed him for the Jackdaw that he was.

うぬぼれたカササギ  🐦 

神様ユピテルが鳥たちの王を決めると宣言し、「最も美しい鳥」を選ぶために、ある日を指定してすべての鳥を集めるよう命じました。

鳥たちはその日に向けて、川辺で羽を洗い、美しく整え始めました。
カササギもその場にいましたが、自分の地味な羽では王にはなれないと思いました。

そこで他の鳥たちが去ったあとに、彼らが落としたカラフルな羽を拾って自分の体に飾りつけました。
その姿は誰よりも華やかに見えました。

いよいよ審査の日、鳥たちはユピテルの前に整列しました。
ユピテルはカササギを王にしようとしましたが、他の鳥たちは怒って彼に襲いかかり、偽りの羽をむしり取ってしまいました。
そしてカササギの正体が明らかになったのです。

見た目をごまかしても、真実はいずれ明らかになる。
