당나귀와 애완 강아지 🐴 🐶 THE ASS AND THE LAP-DOG

 

옛날에 한 남자가 당나귀 한 마리와 애완견 한 마리를 기르고 있었다. 

당나귀는 마구간에서 귀리와 건초를 충분히 먹으며 당나귀로서는 더할 나위 없이 좋은 대접을 받고 있었다. 

작은 개는 주인의 총애를 받아 주인이 자주 쓰다듬어 주고 무릎 위에 앉혀 주곤 했다. 

주인이 저녁 식사를 하러 나갔다가 돌아올 때면, 맞이하러 뛰어오는 개에게 맛있는 음식을 한두 조각씩 가져다 주곤 했다.

당나귀는 사실 할 일이 많았다. 

수레를 끌거나 곡식을 갈거나 농장의 짐을 나르는 일을 해야 했다. 얼마 지나지 않아 당나귀는 노동으로 점철된 자신의 삶과 애완견의 편안하고 게으른 삶을 비교하며 질투심을 품게 되었다.

마침내 어느 날, 당나귀는 고삐를 끊고 주인이 저녁 식사를 위해 앉자마자 집 안으로 뛰어들어갔다. 

그는 작은 애완견의 장난을 흉내 내며 깡충깡충 뛰고 날뛰었다. 

서툰 몸짓으로 식탁을 뒤엎고 그릇들을 깨뜨렸다. 그것도 모자라서, 개가 그렇게 하는 것을 자주 보았던 것처럼 주인의 무릎 위로 뛰어오르려고까지 했다.

그때 하인들이 주인이 위험에 처한 것을 보고 막대기와 곤봉으로 어리석은 당나귀를 마구 때렸고, 반죽음이 된 상태로 마구간으로 쫓아버렸다.

"아, 이 모든 것을 내가 자초했구나!" 당나귀가 울부짖었다. 

"왜 나는 내 본연의 명예로운 지위에 만족하지 못하고, 그 쓸모없는 작은 애완견의 우스꽝스러운 재롱을 흉내 내려고 했을까?"

"자신의 본분에 만족하지 못하고 남을 무작정 따라하면 화를 부른다."

이 우화는 자기 자리에서 최선을 다하는 삶의 중요성을 강조합니다.
남의 삶이 더 좋아 보인다고 해서 자기 역할을 저버리면
결국엔 어울리지 않는 불행한 결과를 맞게 된다는 메시지입니다.

🐴 THE ASS AND THE LAP-DOG 🐶

There was once a man who had an Ass and a Lap-dog. 

The Ass was housed in the stable with plenty of oats and hay to eat and was as well off as an ass could be. 

The little Dog was made a great pet of by his master, who fondled him and often let him lie in his lap; and if he went out to dinner, he would bring back a tit-bit or two to give him when he ran to meet him on his return. 

The Ass had, it is true, a good deal of work to do, carting or grinding the corn, or carrying the burdens of the farm: and ere long he became very jealous, contrasting his own life of labour with the ease and idleness of the Lap-dog. 
At last one day he broke his halter, and frisking into the house just as his master sat down to dinner, he pranced and capered about, mimicking the frolics of the little favourite, upsetting the table and smashing the crockery with his clumsy efforts. 

Not content with that, he even tried to jump on his master's lap, as he had so often seen the dog allowed to do. 

 

At that the servants, seeing the danger their master was in, belaboured the silly Ass with sticks and cudgels, and drove him back to his stable half dead with his beating. 

"Alas!" he cried,

"all this I have brought on myself. Why could I not be satisfied with my natural and honourable position, without wishing to imitate the ridiculous antics of that useless little Lap-dog?"
