소 외양간에 숨은 사슴

한 마리 사슴이 사냥개들에게 쫓기다가 농장 마당으로 도망쳤습니다.
사슴은 외양간에 들어가 여러 마리의 소가 있는 곳에서,
비어 있는 구유의 건초 더미 속에 몸을 숨겼습니다.
뿔 끝만 건초 위로 살짝 보이는 상태였죠.

잠시 후, 소 한 마리가 말했습니다.
"여기 왜 들어왔어? 이렇게 숨어 있다간 농부한테 들켜 잡힐 위험이 있잖아."

사슴은 간청하며 말했습니다.
"제발 지금만 좀 숨게 해줘. 밤이 되면 어둠을 틈타 몰래 빠져나갈 수 있을 거야."

그날 오후, 여러 명의 일꾼들이 외양간에 들락날락하며
소를 돌봤지만 아무도 사슴의 존재를 눈치채지 못했습니다.
사슴은 안도하며 혼잣말로 "이제 살았다!" 하고 중얼거리며 소들에게 고마워했습니다.

그때 아까 말했던 소가 말했습니다.
"잘됐으면 좋겠지만, 아직 끝난 게 아니야. 우리 주인이 오면 널 반드시 찾아낼 거야.
그 사람 눈은 정말 날카롭거든."

그리고 정말 얼마 지나지 않아 주인이 나타나 외양간 상태를 살피기 시작했습니다.
"이 녀석들 굶기고 뭐 하는 거야! 건초 더 줘! 바닥에도 깔아주고!"

그는 말하며 직접 건초를 들어 올렸고, 그 밑에 숨겨진 사슴을 발견했습니다.
즉시 일꾼들을 불러 사슴을 붙잡게 했고,
그 사슴은 결국 식탁 위 고기로 쓰이게 되었습니다.

THE STAG IN THE OX-STALL

 

A Stag, chased from his lair by the hounds, took refuge in a farmyard, and, entering a stable where a number of oxen were stalled, thrust himself under a pile of hay in a vacant stall, where he lay concealed, all but the tips of his horns.

 

Presently one of the Oxen said to him, "What has induced you to come in here? Aren't you aware of the risk you are running of being captured by the herdsmen?" To which he replied, "Pray let me stay for the present. When night comes I shall easily escape under cover of the dark." In the course of the afternoon more than one of the farm-hands came in, to attend to the wants of the cattle, but not one of them noticed the presence of the Stag, who accordingly began to congratulate himself on his escape and to express his gratitude to the Oxen.

 

"We wish you well," said the one who had spoken before, "but you are not out of danger yet. If the master comes, you will certainly be found out, for nothing ever escapes his keen eyes." Presently, sure enough, in he came, and made a great to-do about the way the Oxen were kept.

 

"The beasts are starving," he cried; "here, give them more hay, and put plenty of litter under them."

 

As he spoke, he seized an armful himself from the pile where the Stag lay concealed, and at once detected him.

 

 

Calling his men, he had him seized at once and killed for the table.
