[이솝우화] 모기와 사자 🦟🦁 THE GNAT AND THE LION 🦟🦁蚊とライオン

어느 날 모기가 사자에게 다가가 말했다.
“난 너 따위가 전혀 두렵지 않아.
너보다 내가 훨씬 강하지!
네 힘이란 고작 발톱으로 할퀴고,
이빨로 무는 것뿐이잖아. 화난 여인처럼 말이야.”

사자는 노려보았지만 모기는 도전장을 내밀었다.
“믿기지 않으면, 싸워보자고!”

모기는 날개를 파닥이며 “뿌우” 하고 전쟁의 나팔을 불었다.
그리고 사자의 코끝을 콕 물었다.
사자는 놀라서 코를 긁다가 오히려 자신을 할퀴고 피를 흘렸다.
모기는 크게 기뻐하며 하늘로 날아올랐다.
“하하! 내가 왕을 이겼다!”

하지만 잠시 후, 자랑스레 날던 모기는 거미줄에 걸려
작은 거미에게 잡혀 먹히고 말았다.

사자를 이긴 모기가, 결국 하찮은 거미의 먹이가 된 것이다.

🪶 교훈:
자만은 가장 큰 적이다. 작은 승리에 취하면 더 큰 함정에 빠지게 된다.

THE GNAT AND THE LION

A Gnat once went up to a Lion and said, 

"I am not in the least afraid of you: I don't even allow that you are a match for me in strength.
What does your strength amount to after all? 

That you can scratch with your claws and bite with your teeth--just like a woman in a temper--and nothing more. 

But I'm stronger than you: if you don't believe it, let us fight and see." 

So saying, the Gnat sounded his horn, and darted in and bit the Lion on the nose. 

When the Lion felt the sting, in his haste to crush him he scratched his nose badly, and made it bleed, but failed altogether to hurt the Gnat, which buzzed off in triumph, elated by its victory. 

Presently, however, it got entangled in a spider's web, and was caught and eaten by the spider, thus falling a prey to an insignificant insect after having triumphed over the King of the Beasts.

🦟🦁蚊とライオン

ある日、蚊がライオンのところへ行って言いました。
「おまえなんか、全然怖くない。
力だって、たいしたことないだろう。
せいぜいツメでひっかいたり、歯でかみついたり、
怒った女みたいなものさ。」

ライオンは怒りましたが、蚊は挑戦しました。
「信じないなら、戦ってみよう！」

蚊は羽を鳴らして「プーッ」と角笛を吹き、
ライオンの鼻を刺しました。
ライオンは痛みに耐えかねて鼻をひっかき、
血を流しましたが、蚊を倒すことはできませんでした。

蚊は勝利を喜び、得意げに飛び回りました。
しかしそのあとすぐ、クモの巣に引っかかり、
小さなクモに食べられてしまいました。

ライオンを倒した蚊が、
結局は小さな虫に負けたのです。

💡教訓：
うぬぼれは最大の敵。小さな勝利に酔えば、大きな落とし穴に落ちる。
