[이솝우화] 당나귀와 성상(聖像) 🐴 THE ASS CARRYING THE IMAGE 🐴 ロバと聖像

어떤 사람이 신상(神像)을 등에 싣고 그것을 마을의 신전으로 가져가려고 했습니다.
길을 가는 동안 사람들이 그 신상을 보고 머리를 숙이며 경의를 표했습니다. 
그런데 당나귀는 사람들이 자신에게 절하는 것이라 착각하고 우쭐해하기 시작했습니다.
결국 그는 지나치게 거만해져 짐을 지고 가기를 거부하고 멈춰 서 버렸습니다. 
그러자 주인은 화가 나서 몽둥이로 세게 때리며 말했습니다.
“이 멍청한 놈아, 사람들이 너 같은 당나귀에게 절한다고 생각하느냐?”

🪶 교훈:
다른 이의 공로를 자신의 것으로 삼는 자는 결국 큰 수치를 당한다.

THE ASS CARRYING THE IMAGE

A certain man put an Image on the back of his Ass to take it to one of the temples of the town. 

As they went along the road all the people they met uncovered and bowed their heads out of reverence for the
Image; but the Ass thought they were doing it out of respect for himself, and began to give himself airs accordingly. 

At last he became so conceited that he imagined he could do as he liked, and, by way of protest against the load he was carrying, he came to a full stop and flatly declined to proceed any further. 

His driver, finding him so obstinate, hit him hard and long with his stick, saying the while,
"Oh, you dunder-headed idiot, do you suppose it's come to this, that men pay worship to an Ass?"

    Rude shocks await those who take to themselves the credit that is
    due to others.

🐴 ロバと聖像

ある男がロバの背中に聖像を載せ、町の神殿へ運んでいました。
道を歩く人々は聖像に敬意を表して帽子を取り、頭を下げました。
ところがロバは、それが自分への尊敬だと勘違いし、得意げな態度を取り始めました。
ついには思い上がって荷を運ぶのを拒み、立ち止まってしまいました。
主人は怒って棒でロバを打ちながら言いました。
「この愚か者め、人々がロバなんかに礼拝すると思っているのか？」

他人の功績を自分のものにする者は、必ず恥をかく。
