12. 장난이 심한 개

 

 

한마리 개가 만나는 사람들의 발뒤꿈치에 조용히 다가가 물곤 했습니다.

그 개의 주인은 사람들이 그 개의 존재를 알 수 있도록 개의 목에 종을 달았습니다.

개는 이것이 특별한 표시라고 생각하고, 자랑스럽게 시장 곳곳에서 종을 울리며 다녔습니다.

어느 날, 나이든 사냥개가 그에게 말했습니다.

"왜 자신을 그렇게 드러내는 거니? 네가 지닌 그 종은 공로의 표시가 아니야, 나를 믿게. 오히려 불명예의 표시, 모든 사람들이 너를 예의 없는 개로 피해야 한다는 공개 경고야."

 

악명은 종종 명성으로 오인됩니다.

A DOG used to run up quietly to the heels of everyone he met, and to bite them without notice. 
His master suspended a bell about his neck so that the Dog might give notice of his presence wherever he went. 
Thinking it a mark of distinction, the Dog grew proud of his bell and went tinkling it all over the marketplace. 
One day an old hound said to him: “Why do you make such an exhibition of yourself? That bell that you carry is not, believe me, any order of merit, but on the contrary a mark of disgrace, a public notice to all men to avoid you as an ill mannered dog.”

Notoriety is often mistaken for fame.
