사자와 당나귀가 함께 사냥을 나섰습니다.
그러다 야생 염소들이 모여 있는 동굴을 발견했습니다.
사자는 동굴 입구에 서서 염소들이 나오기를 기다렸고,
당나귀는 안으로 들어가 있는 힘껏 울어대며 염소들을 놀라게 했습니다.
겁에 질린 염소들이 하나씩 밖으로 나오자, 사자는 차례대로 쓰러뜨렸습니다.
마침내 동굴이 텅 비자, 당나귀는 밖으로 나와 말했습니다.
“봐, 내가 녀석들을 얼마나 잘 놀라게 했는지 알겠지?”
그러자 사자가 대답했습니다.
“정말 잘했어. 네가 당나귀라는 걸 몰랐다면, 나도 놀라서 도망쳤을 거야.”
💡교훈:
겉모습이나 소리만으로는 진짜 실력을 속일 수 있다. 그러나 진실을 아는 자 앞에서는 통하지 않는다.
THE LION AND THE ASS
A Lion and an Ass set up as partners and went a-hunting together.
In course of time they came to a cave in which there were a number of wild goats.
The Lion took up his stand at the mouth of the cave, and waited for them to come out; while the Ass went inside and brayed for all he was worth in order to frighten them out into the open.
The Lion struck them down one by one as they appeared; and when the cave was empty the Ass came out and said,
"Well, I scared them pretty well, didn't I?"
"I should think you did,"
said the Lion:
"why, if I hadn't known you were an Ass, I should have turned and run myself."
🦁 ライオンとロバ
ライオンとロバは狩りの仲間になりました。
やがて、野生のヤギがたくさんいる洞窟を見つけました。
ライオンは洞窟の入口に立ち、ヤギが出てくるのを待ちました。
ロバは中に入って、力いっぱい大声で鳴き、ヤギたちを驚かせました。
怯えたヤギが一匹ずつ外へ出てくると、ライオンは次々と倒していきました。
洞窟が空になると、ロバは外に出て言いました。
「どうだ、僕がかなり驚かせただろう？」
ライオンはこう答えました。
「本当によくやった。お前がロバだと知らなかったら、俺も逃げ出していたかもしれない。」
💡教訓:
見た目や声だけで実力を誤魔化すことはできるが、本当の姿を知っている者には通用しない。
