[이솝우화] 염소치기와 야생 염소들 🐐 THE GOATHERD AND THE WILD GOATS 🐐 山羊飼いと野生の山羊たち

한 염소치기가 들판에서 자기 염소 떼를 돌보고 있었다.
그때 여러 마리의 야생 염소들이 다가와 그의 염소 떼에 섞였다.
날이 저물자 그는 자기 염소들과 함께 그 야생 염소들도 우리로 몰아넣었다.

다음 날은 날씨가 너무 나빠서 들로 나갈 수 없었다.
그래서 그는 염소들을 우리 안에 두고 먹이를 주었다.
자기 염소들에게는 겨우 배고픔을 면할 만큼만 주었지만,
야생 염소들에게는 배부르게 먹을 만큼 넉넉히 주었다.
그는 그들이 마음에 들어 머물기를 바랐기 때문이다.

그러나 날씨가 개어 다시 들로 나가자,
야생 염소들은 산 쪽으로 달아나 버렸다.
염소치기는 크게 화를 내며 외쳤다.
“이 배은망덕한 것들! 그렇게 잘 대해줬는데 이렇게 떠나다니!”

그러자 한 야생 염소가 뒤돌아보며 말했다.
“당신이 우리를 너무 잘 대해줬기 때문에 떠나는 겁니다.
새로 온 우리에게 당신이 그렇게 잘 해준다면,
다른 새로운 염소가 오면 우리는 금세 잊혀질 테니까요.”

💡 교훈:
새로운 사람에게만 잘하는 이는 오래된 친구의 신뢰를 잃는다.

 

THE GOATHERD AND THE WILD GOATS

A Goatherd was tending his goats out at pasture when he saw a number of Wild Goats approach and mingle with his flock. 

At the end of the day he drove them home and put them all into the pen together. 

Next day the weather was so bad that he could not take them out as usual: so he kept them at home in the pen, and fed them there. 

He only gave his own goats enough food to keep them from starving, but he gave the Wild Goats as much as they could eat and more; for he was very anxious for them to stay, and he thought that if he fed them well they wouldn't want to leave him. When the weather improved, he took them all out to pasture again; but no sooner had they got near the hills
than the Wild Goats broke away from the flock and scampered off. 

The Goatherd was very much disgusted at this, and roundly abused them for their ingratitude. 

"Rascals!" 

he cried, 

"to run away like that after the way I've treated you!" 

Hearing this, one of them turned round and said, 

"Oh, yes, you treated us all right--too well, in fact; it was just that that put us on our guard. If you treat newcomers like
ourselves so much better than your own flock, it's more than likely that, if another lot of strange goats joined yours, _we_ should then be neglected in favour of the last comers."

🐐 山羊飼いと野生の山羊たち

ある山羊飼いが牧場で自分の山羊の群れを世話していました。
すると、数頭の野生の山羊たちが近づき、群れに混ざりました。
夕方になると、彼は自分の山羊たちと野生の山羊たちを一緒に囲いの中へ入れました。

翌日は天気が悪く外に出られず、囲いの中で餌をやりました。
彼は自分の山羊には飢えをしのぐ程度の餌しか与えませんでしたが、
野生の山羊にはたっぷりと与えました。
彼らが気に入って自分の群れに残ってくれることを期待したのです。

しかし天気が良くなると、野生の山羊たちは山に向かって走り去ってしまいました。
山羊飼いは怒って叫びました。
「恩知らずなやつらめ！ こんなに良くしてやったのに！」

すると一頭の野生の山羊が振り返って言いました。
「あなたが私たちをあまりにもよく扱ったからこそ逃げるのです。
新参者にそんなに良くするなら、次に新しい山羊が来た時には
私たちが今度は見捨てられるに違いありませんから。」

💡教訓:
新しい者ばかりを優遇する者は、古い友の信頼を失う。
